Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy and Hormone Replacement Therapy
At Glo, we provide an individualize approach to optimizing hormones that is safe and effective
There are 37 different symptoms of perimenopause and this transition to menopause can start as early as your mid 30s. Symptoms may include irregular periods, heavy periods, short cycles, breast tenderness, night sweats, mood changes, anxiety, depression, low muscle mass, decreased libido, acne, abnormal hair growth (facial) or hair loss (scalp), cognitive issues, change in body odour, dry and itchy skin, weight gain, fatigue and sleep changes, plus a myriad of other symptoms. At GLO one of the methods we use to achieve optimal hormonal balancing for our patients experiencing perimenopause and menopause may be to prescribe Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT).
Women may also be experiencing PCOS, PMS, PMDD and fertility concerns that need to be addressed in a more comprehensive manner. A comprehensive hormonal assessment and management plan is required to address these concerns as well.
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is another option for hormone replacement therapy that is compounded in a pharmacy. They are designed to have the exact some chemical and molecular structure as the hormones produced in the human body. BHRT is an effective alternative to conventionally made hormone replacement therapy that is safe and effective when used appropriately under regular medical supervision.
Menopause occurs when there has been no menstrual cycle for 12 months
Women can experience menopause as early as age 40 or into their late 50s with an average age of 51 years. The transition through menopause for some is easy while for others it significantly impacts their quality of life. Loss of estrogen and progesterone can cause numerous symptoms and impact our quality of life. Some women describe it as feeling like a different person (not always in a good way). This loss of hormones impacts your bone, brain, heart, and urogenital health. Most women think of hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. There are estrogen and progesterone receptors on all our organs, having widespread impacts on how we feel. Symptoms are not isolated to the breast and female reproductive organs.
There is a lot of misinformation around the safety of hormones. Women are often told the symptoms they are experiencing are normal and they just need to get through it. They may be offered an antidepressant, birth control pill, or a sleeping pill. There are other options. At GLO we present the options, both of conventional and bioidentical hormones. Risks, side effects, and monitoring of hormones are addressed. This informs the patients allowing them to make a decision that is in line with their goals.
Let’s not ignore the men, as their hormones are important also!
